Sometimes my snark turns to anger. Being big time pissed off. Tonight is one of those times.
I have been a member of LA Boxing for almost 5 years. I joined the day that they opened in Littleton. For most of that time, the workout schedule has been pretty consistent. Boxing cardio on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Even when the Parker gym opened and I started going there all the time...same schedule.
That has all changed in the past few months. There has been a migration to kickboxing, and the number of boxing classes, at this BOXING GYM has gone to almost nothing. First, Fridays were changed to kickboxing cardio, then Wednesdays were changed to MMA. The reason? I can only guess. I will give you that some people like kickboxing better than boxing. Wednesdays were all about because the trainer is more of a MMA guy, and he wanted to do it.
In the past month, the remaining 5:15 boxing class has been led by a Muy Thai guy. Wonderful kid, but he told me to my face that he has kicks in the boxing class because "that is what they told me they wanted me to do." So there goes Mondays. However, in the past couple weeks the Thai guy moved more toward boxing. I was pleased with that, and pretty damn content.
Tonight, Thai guy was not there, so another trainer took the class. After warm ups, she got into the real meat and potatoes. Kicking. I asked if she was doing a boxing class or a kickboxing class, and she said the latter. I started taking off my gloves. Fuck it. She said that she could switch to a boxing class, but by then, my hissy meter was on 24. Out of 10. I left. I am sure it was very dramatic.
So theoretically, at this BOXING GYM, there are only two evening boxing cardio classes, out of 10 classes that occur in the evening. 20%. Sad.
Or is a commentary to what the people want? I again admit that may be the case. But it is not the reason I go there. You want boxing at this gym, you will have to pay extra for one-on-one training. Even the Fight Team is kicking and MMA. I would love to get together every couple nights or Saturdays to spar with someone who wants to spar. But I am not going (pay $40 more a month) to go in there and get kicked and taken down on the mat. Or be discounted. I have continued to go there for what was billed at the get go. Boxing. The boxing in boxing gym.
So are my expectations too high? Should I just let it go (yeah, I know I should)? Should I ponder a change?
I am not going to quit the gym, the people and the facilities are awesome. There isn't anything like it in town, and I am happy being a member. But maybe stick to Parker for the individual training, and go to Lone Tree for the (shocking) boxing classes on Monday and Wednesday.
So I made an ass of myself tonight. Isn't the first time, isn't going to be the last. If people think I am a drama queen, then goody for them, they are correct. If they think ill of me, then I really don't care. As long as I learn what I want to learn, get bang for my buck, then I'm good. You don't like me? Fuck it. I probably wouldn't like you either.
Time to change the expectations? Oh yeah. This has been a trend that finally reared it's head tonight. The girl tonight taught the kickboxing because this is what they pay her for. That is what they pay the Thai guy for, that is what they pay the MMA guy for. Where are the boxers? Two classes a week, that's where. And until someone realizes that people want to box, then it ain't gonna change.
